One of the many perks of an Oxfordeducation is the access it gives you to the Bodleian Library – and with it, acollection of books that is probably rivalled only by the British Library. Thehuge system of libraries all feed into each other – each college has one toitself – and deciding where you’re going to spend your time working can be animportant decision. Here we take a look at some of the nicest, or at leastplain useful, libraries in Oxford.

A pretty obvious starting point, thisdome-topped goliath has become the staple image to stand for all Oxfordlibraries, although it did not start out as such: built in 1748, the Camerawould not become a useful reading room until a hundred years later, whenthen-librarian Henry Wentworth Acland developed its capabilities. Today ithouses the History Faculty collection, which is why more students can be seensmoking outside the Camera than reading inside of it.

Being from St Hugh’s myself, I cannot denythere is some bias in this choice – nevertheless, Hugh’s boasts one of the mostextensive libraries of any college, because when it was first built in 1886 byElizabeth Wordsworth (great-niece of the famous poet), it was an all-womencollege, so the university demanded it be built outside the city limits. Evenworse, women were not allowed to use the Bodleian Library, which prompted thedevelopment of the huge library the college now has.

Although awkwardly funded by ChristopherCodrington through a fortune made in plantation slavery, this library –situated in the realm of All Souls College, one of the most exclusiveeducational institutions in the world – is practically a mansion for books.Elegant, majestic, and with a signification collection of rare manuscripts, theCodrington is one of the jewels of the Oxford library scene.

This is the big daddy, the oldest libraryin Oxford. Students have to go through a full security check before going in tomake sure they don’t take anything except paper and pencils in. This may seem alittle extreme, but the library’s popularity has skyrocketing since it was usedin the Harry Potter films as the Hogwarts Library, and zealous fans are alwaystrying to sneak in. And a special mention for…the GladstoneLink最后得特别提一下the Gladstone Link

This famous, or rather infamous, stretch oflibrary is a stark underground area lit by harsh white light and decorated withnothing more than bits of metal. Students shuffle around the place in azombie-like daze, unaware of the time, day, month or even year. It is, withouta doubt, one of the most depressing, soul-absorbing places you might evervisit. By God, you get a lot of work done, though.
